Sujit Choudhry Discusses The Constitutional Challenges Ukraine Is Facing

Sujit Choudhry, a college professor and director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions, traveled to Kiev, Ukraine on 7-10-17 in order to join a discussion about the political crisis in that nation (prnewswire.com).  They have a semi-presidential system of government which has a number of glaring weaknesses due to their constitution. A workshop was held which included him, other international constitutional experts, and organizations in Ukraine.

Ukraine has been trying to form a democracy for many years but their constitution holds them back. Choudhry said one of the biggest problems is that the president is given far too much power in the constitution. Other problems are how those in the legislature are elected plus political parties that are quite weak in nature. Adding these issues together means that this country’s move towards democracy has been anything but stable.

Over the past 20 years, Sujit Choudhry has helped many emerging democracies either build a constitution from scratch or make modifications to their existing ones in order to improve them.

Standing On The Expectations Of Democracy

The expectation of democracy seems to stand on a high mountain where few dare to climb. The hesitance we have in believing in the highest ideals of democracy comes from a conviction. This conviction is the work of professionals like Sujit Choudhry. The expectations of democracy are the values, virtues and ideals of society that’s founded on equality.

The freedoms you and I have are assumed to be innate with the life we have in our bodies. This means that even the slightest interference into the liberties of another person becomes a large offense. Sujit Choudhry is a professional that lives up to the expectations of society and by setting the standard of democracy himself.

No Better Candidate Than Sujit Choudhry

Sujit takes this stance because of his personal passions in transition. This professional is called into many foreign nations that are developing their democratic governments. His work brings these countries and people to a better understanding of the democratic process (https://works.bepress.com/sujit_choudhry/). What seems simple from the outside is a very complicated matter.

The challenge is democracy itself. When people are governed by those they have elected, the people will also have a great deal of power. True democratic nations have to listen to every citizen and be emphatic to every issue. Adjusting to this dynamic brought the United States into civil war and before it unified itself as one republic.

Experience and Constitutional Law

The lessons we learn from past developments of democracy give us a trajectory for today. The world is organized in a manner where we’re still learning about the applications of democracy. This process opens the eyes of the world as leaders in democracy are falling short of the expectations set. The short coming is apparent to us because of the expertise of Sujit Choudhry.

Professor Choudhry gives us a glimpse into the political world and it’s true organization.  Read this note-worthy interview on iconnectblog.com.  Our standards for society are held high but not high enough. In conjunction, leaders are not held accountable in the right manner and because the people’s voices haven’t been heard.

Legal Expert Looks to Help with Constitutional Reform

Sujit Choudhry is a leading legal expert who has recently met with other experts to discuss the political system of Ukraine. During this meeting, Sujit went over the legal system and constitution of the nation. While going over the constitution and political situation of Ukraine, Choudhry determined that the nation would be better off if it would make some constitutional reforms. As of right now, Ukraine has a political system that is not entirely democratic. It currently has elections that favor the incumbent along with a weak group of opposing parties in the legislature. Along with these two things, Ukraine also allows the president to use a considerable amount of power. With a number of constitutional reforms, Ukraine will likely be in position to provide a fair political system according to Sujit Choudhry. Sujit Choudhry Joins Top Constitutional Law Scholars in Offering a Solution to the Catalonia Crisis

With a shared goal of helping to address the current crisis in Catalonia, Sujit Choudhry teamed up with renowned constitutional law scholars. Choudhry and his team wrote an open letter addressed to the Spanish and Catalan governments regarding the ongoing crisis. They advised the two governments to meet and carry out dialogue regarding the constitutional issues that affect them.

The constitutional law scholars also asked the president of Catalonia to organize a referendum with the interests of the Catalan people at hand. As expressed in the letter, the scholars believe that this referendum could show the Catalonian president’s abidance to the process of seceding from Spain. The open letter also advised Spain’s prime minister to come to terms with the fact that the Catalan people desire to have secession.

Sujit Choudhry and his team requested the prime minister of Spain to put a stop to his unfriendly ways of handling the Catalans. The scholars believe that the crisis is likely to be intensified by the cruelty of the Spain government towards the Catalans. They are certain that the crisis can be stopped when the two governments agree to peacefully engage in a constitutional dialogue with the interests of the Catalans at hand. Zoran Oklopcic, Robert Howse, and Asanga Welikala were among the constitutional law scholars that Choudhry teamed up with to write the letter.   Read more of his views on politically related issues in this link on iconnectblog.com.

Sujit Choudhry And The World We Forgotten

For many of those living in the modern world’s most advanced societies, it’s not clear how important a standing constitution can be. It’s only when living without the basic rights as identified by strong constitutions that we realize how dysfunctional a society is. For a people to be one, they must share the same ideals.

If not, they must at least agree and to varying levels that enable cooperation. For those nations who already have these things in place, a life without it seems unreal. It presents a world; many have forgotten. These countries don’t see the work Sujit Choudhry, has accomplished. They only see the results without the pain to get there.

The Place of Transition In The Modern World

The fact is, there are a number of nations who still need a strong constitutional input within their society. There is also a method whereby these existing entities can enable this. There are basic steps we learn from Sujit CHoudhry and his legacy.   Learn about his insights and views on things, read this recently authored article of Sujit on activistpost.com.

We know that getting an entire country together is tough work. But we also know that it’s possible. By modeling and examining the existing formations of world-wide constitutions, a real decision on a country’s direction can be made. That decision often enables a nation to rise up and enter the world-class arena. More to read on en.wikipedia.org.
