Sujit Choudhry Leading Figure in the World of Comparative Law

One of the countries that have been in the news in the last few years due to the ongoing political unrest in the country is Ukraine. The country had tremendous potential of growth and was moving on the right track for long, but due to the weak government, inefficient governance, non-transparent electoral process, and other internal and external factors, the country marched towards its doom eventually. Currently, the economy of the country has been biting the dust and is sustaining due to the international aid provided by other nations. The government of the country is also unstable and has not been able to make any firm decisions for the betterment of the country or its people for a long time.

Sujit Choudhry, one of the leading men in the world of constitutional reforms and the comparative law, was invited to the conference held in Kiev recently to debate on the political issues and unrest the country has been facing. Many other top dignitaries from across the globe were also present at the conference to share their views and perspectives on how the political and social turmoil that Ukraine has been in the past few years can be reversed.

Sujit Choudhry said that one of the reasons why Ukraine has not been able to come out of the political unrest it has been facing for long is because of the semi-presidential format of leadership the country follows. It is a system that doesn’t allow the country’s top leadership to make strong decisions unilaterally, and there is a long set of procedures to follow in order to pass one amendment or policy that the leaders decide. Thus, most of the times, these decisions are road blocked by other leaders, which results in the delay of strong policy making for the benefit of the country.  For updates on his latest work, click on

Sujit Choudhry – A Force Behind Changing Constitutions in Emerging Democracies

An interview of Sujit Choudhry reveals a lot about him especially as far as constitutional changes are concerned. Sujit heads the Center for Constitutional Transitions which is an organization that leads to the generational and mobilization of knowledge and support of Constitution construction. This happens through the assembly and other intentional expert networks that produce evidence based policy options. The organization, under Sujit’s leadership, has worked with a variety of think tanks, multilateral organizations as well as NGOs among other interested partners with the same goal.

Sujit Choudhry explains that the move to establish CCT was inspired by the many years that he has worked in the field as a constitutional adviser for emerging democracies around the world. Through his experience, he has come across a lot of knowledge as well as inquires surrounding the constitutional transitions. His experience has revealed that most of these newly formed democracies sometimes experience problems even after the formation of the Constitutions because there is no useful information available to them to refer since most of what is available is untrue or even outdated. In most cases, there is no information at all. Therefore, the lack of concrete competent information on these issues interferes with the effective implementation of constitutions.
