In September of this year, Catalonia attempted to hold a vote on secession from Spain. The government in Madrid responded to the referendum by sending security forces to suppress voting. Catalonia generates one-fifth of Spain’s economic output.
Spain has resorted to violence to check the secessionist movement. In response to the crisis a University of California, Berkeley Professor of Law Sujit Choudhry became one of three Constitutional law scholars who authored an appeal for a peaceful and democratic solution to the issue of Catalonian independence. Choudhry has guided nine pledging democracies in constructing their constitutions. He is a founding director of the Center for Constitutional Transitions.

The missive asks Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy not to suppress the rights of Catalonians who support independence. Catalonia’s President Carles Puigdemont was asked to demonstrate that he is in earnest when it comes to Catalonian independence.
The letter warns that anything other than a peaceful democratic resolution will have repercussions across Europe. If Spain’s oppression of Catalonia continues the principles upon which the European Union was formed could be undone.
The three constitutional scholars expressed the belief that only a fairly conducted referendum can establish the true attitudes of the majority of Catalonians with regards to independence. The letter suggests that even if the majority do not support a complete break with Spain Catalonians might support a less extreme solution to the current situation.
It was pointed out that PM Rajoy’s continued violations of the rights of Catalonian separatist are in direct violation of International Law and that the Prime Minister’s actions are an offense against Catalonia sovereignty. A relevant article to read on patch.com.
In closing the missive stated that PM Rajoy must accept Catalonia’s independence if it is the wish of the majority of its people. Secondly, if Spain’s program of oppression in Catalonia continues then oppression and violence will become the only way Spain can retain control over Catalonia. Everyone by now has heard about the much trumpeted “Russian collusion” scandal which has swirled about the 2016 US presidential elections like a dark maelstrom.
Most of the allegations concern a Russian company which bought and paid for a lavish amount of political ads which were then posted on the social media platform, Facebook and were believed to have contributed to the election of Donald J. Trump. This opened up a bevy of investigations into Trump and his cabinet and associates supposed connection to The Kremlin and Vladimir Putin himself.
However, according to, End Citizens United, or ECU – a very well known political action committee, dedicated to overturning the momentous Citizens United v. FEC ruling which allowed dark money pools to overtake the American political process – the Russians are not the only culprits in the meddling which took place during the 2016 elections. Indeed, according to the group, a congregation of various and shadowy Chinese foreign nationals manipulated and abused legal loopholes to donate a substantial amount of money, reportedly a sizable 1.3 million dollars, to none other than presidential candidate Jeb Bush. End Citizens United largely blamed the FEC (The Federal Election Commission) for the meddling, citing their security protocols and legislative measures as “outdated.”

Though the candidate with the most money does not always win, as was the case with the 2016 election, there is a certain threshold of cash which everyone simply must have to run a viable campaign. Furthermore, it is not just money itself that moves campaigns forwards but also influence peddling and meddling, such as the previously mentioned Russian Facebook ads. In light of these facts, End Citizens United strongly urged the Federal Election Commission to step up to the plate and take responsibility for what they have done to compromise the security of the American electoral process by allowing political contributions to be classified as “speech” which is thus, protected. The Democratic Party have also taken steps to secure the electoral process such as the DISCLOSE act as well as the Get Foreign Money Out of Politics Act and, just like End Citizens United, they also look to overturn the Citizens United v. FEC supreme court ruling that opened the floodgates to begin with in 2010.
Health care costs in the U.S. have escalated due to patients requiring intensive and expensive medical care. A rise in population and aging are also other factors affecting the costs as demand for health care services prevails. However, mitigation of some diseases has resulted in less need of frequent medical services and thus lowering annual spending.
According to Gerard Anderson, a researcher at Bloomberg School of Public Health, prices of medical care directly results into higher spending. Looking at different diseases, though, there are several factors that lead to individual increase. For diabetes alone, it has the greatest increase in medical care costs, with $64 billion spent yearly. This rise has been facilitated by aging, population growth and high costs of pharmaceuticals along with prevalence of the disease.
Despite best efforts to reduce spending, inpatient care costs have still plummeted even with short hospital stays. Outpatient care for all diseases has also risen as some patients avoid hospitalization. However, the value purchased for the care and pharmaceuticals cannot be justified.

With a shared goal of helping to address the current crisis in Catalonia, Sujit Choudhry teamed up with renowned constitutional law scholars. Choudhry and his team wrote an open letter addressed to the Spanish and Catalan governments regarding the ongoing crisis. They advised the two governments to meet and carry out dialogue regarding the constitutional issues that affect them.
The constitutional law scholars also asked the president of Catalonia to organize a referendum with the interests of the Catalan people at hand. As expressed in the letter, the scholars believe that this referendum could show the Catalonian president’s abidance to the process of seceding from Spain. The open letter also advised Spain’s prime minister to come to terms with the fact that the Catalan people desire to have secession.
Sujit Choudhry and his team requested the prime minister of Spain to put a stop to his unfriendly ways of handling the Catalans. The scholars believe that the crisis is likely to be intensified by the cruelty of the Spain government towards the Catalans. They are certain that the crisis can be stopped when the two governments agree to peacefully engage in a constitutional dialogue with the interests of the Catalans at hand. Zoran Oklopcic, Robert Howse, and Asanga Welikala were among the constitutional law scholars that Choudhry teamed up with to write the letter.
